Tax Director - Estate & Gift - Columbus

Department: Tax
Location: Columbus, OH

The Estate & Gift Tax Director will provide high-net individuals, families and business owners with tax planning, estate planning, consulting and tax compliance services. This individual will focus on four major initiatives established by the firm: Profitability, Practice Growth, Client Focus, and Brand Culture/Development.

Tasks:

  • Provide complex fiduciary, personal income, estate and gift compliance services, and estate planning advisory services.
  • Review high-net individual, fiduciary, estate and gift tax returns and other accounting documents.
  • Research state, federal, and international tax laws on a continuous basis and report any impacting notices or audits.
  • Develop effective income and estate tax planning methodologies and comprehensive compliance solutions for our clients.
  • Analyze estate planning legal documents. Deal directly with clients’ attorneys, wealth advisors, commercial lenders, taxing authority agents, and other third parties.
  • Prepare high-level tax memorandums and improve tax savings strategies on behalf of clients.
  • Develop overall approaches and oversee delegation of tasks for completion of assigned client engagements.
  • Support and develop senior managers and managers.
  • Approve engagement budget, billing and scheduling.

Profitability:

  • Delegate client service tasks to team members effectively and monitor their client workload.
  • Conduct internal training sessions or seminars on technical tax subjects.
  • Supply the resources needed by associates to produce expected results and obtain set goals.
  • Consistently achieve targets for realization, utilization and collection of A/R established by department.
  • Participate in and lead “approved” non-client initiatives to improve firm administration.
  • Establish and implement policies that improve departmental processes.
  • Consistently utilize all firm and department software efficiently.

Client Focus:

  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills and working knowledge of accounting and tax software.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify client risks and issues and communicate recommendations to clients and firm associates.
  • Exhibit behavior consistent with rules of conduct of the AICPA, OSCPA and Accountancy Board of Ohio.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with team, other firm associates and client personnel to ensure efficient flow of data, information, and financial issues, risks and recommendations.
  • Identify and present financial improvement opportunities for clients served.
  • Demonstrate appropriate understanding of client’s business, industry and resources available to provide value to clients.
  • Effectively manage competing priorities and projects under tight deadlines while exceeding client expectations.

  • Support and ensure adherence to all administrative policies and procedures of the firm.
  • Exhibit ability to work independently, having confidence in his/her ability to address and resolve conflict with peers, subordinates and firm leaders.

Work Experience|Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; advanced degree in taxation (e.g., MST) or law (e.g., JD, LLM) is preferred.
  • CPA, EA, or equivalent tax certification required.
  • 10+ years of trust, estate, and gift tax experience.
  • Strong experience with tax advisory and estate/trust planning and compliance.
  • Proficiency in federal, state and local tax issues.
  • Experience with CCH Axcess tax software a plus.
  • Experience working in public accounting or tax consultant practice required.
  • Ability to manage multiple prominent work projects simultaneously.
  • Experience reviewing gift, estate, and fiduciary tax returns.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Reliable transportation for occasional on-site client work.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends based on time of year and client demands.

Organizational Relationships:

  • Responsible for the co-management and supervision of the Tax Department staff numbering more than 35 people.
  • Will report directly to Director of Tax & Business Advisory Services.
